Eastern end of church

This view of the church shows the chancel roof and walls, the vestry roofs, the east wall & apex of the nave and the tower. Note the small slit window high up in the nave wall which is is thought to have been designed when the church was rebuilt in the early 14th century, so that the sun's rays would shine through to allow the dark interior of the nave to be better lit and to draw the eye of the congregation to the rood loft which then spanned the east end of the nave. The remains of a cross can also be seen at the apex of the chancel roof and is the only one remaining of four that crowned the apex of all the roofs. The iron railings fence off a small area where a tombstone is now fixed in memory of a previous incumbent. The stone was originally in the whipping stock area between the porch and south transept.
